Adam sent me a couple articles about the upcoming Wolverine movie and the nerdy kid that has been hiding deep inside me for many years crept back to the surface, quietly urging me to write a little something about it…mostly out of shock and dismay from both good and bad announcements for this movie. Following are the links to both articles, a summary of the main points, and a few of the excited squeals i heard in my head while reading about this movie (along with some horrified screams).
‘Friday Night Lights’ Star Lands ‘Wolverine’ Role
Wolverine: Now Inexplicably Starring a Bloody Black Eyed Pea
* X-Men Origins: Wolverine is slated to release on May 1, 2009.
* Hugh Jackman is Wolverine…duh.
* Taylor Kitsch is GAMBIT!!! OMG!!! And he looks the part! Check the first article link for a pic.
* Ryan Reynolds has a cameo as Deadpool! AGAIN, OMG!!! He is certainly buff enough for this role. And I assume this is purely speculation, but the first article states, “It’s expected to only be a cameo, but if the character proves popular, he could be the centerpiece for a future film.”
* will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas will play Wraith. OK, I’m excited that Wraith is in the movie, but a few things…first, Wraith is white…PALE white. And I seriously doubt they plan on painting will.i.am up. They’ll probably do that whole stupid deal where they drastically change an established character’s appearance JUST so they can put a specific person in that role. The thing is…WHY HIM?! What the crap is so special about this guy?! He hasn’t even contributed anything of note or value to the musical world in several years (yes, Black Eyed Peas used to be good way back in the day).
* Liev Schreiber is Victor Creed, who eventually becomes Sabertooth.
* Danny Huston is William Stryker. He looks the part much more than Brian Cox did in X2. He also looks much more sinister.
* Lynn Collins is Silver Fox. Again…what the crap?! Silver Fox is Native American, you ignorant Hollywood jerks. If you want to get technical, she is Canadian, but she is of Native American heritage. Maggie Q was in talks to play her, and would have looked the part in my opinion, despite being Hawaiian (half American, half Vietnamese by descent).
For those of you who are not as knowledgeable on the topic as I, I have posted pictures of each of the above characters. If you’re interested in background, powers, etc., google them, because posting links to all would just be messy.
Wolverine

Gambit

Deadpool

Wraith

William Stryker

Victor Creed

i’m a little skeptical about liev schreiber being sabretooth. i can picture his face being good for the role, but he’s a scrawny dude. i know he won’t officially be sabretooth yet, but he’s still a little guy. i guess we’ll just have to see. he’ll probably buff up real hXc-like.
also, did you follow the link to the article about fergie peeing her pants on stage during a show? pretty gross… and sad. but a funny kind of sad.

The nerdy kid hasn’t been hiding that deep.

Wrong Wraith. The Wraith you have pictured is a fairly new – we’re talking not quite a year old here – character who has some relation to the Kree. I haven’t been able to read the whole thing yet, so I don’t know.
The Wraith they’re talking about for the Wolverine movie actually IS a black guy. His “mutant name” is Kestrel. He’s a teleporter and has the whole “I get old slow” like Wolverine does.
You’re right that Danny Huston does look more like Stryker… BUT… X2 changed things by making Stryker a military man instead of the fanatical televangelist that he originally was in the GN “God Loves, Man Kills” from back in the 80s. So by having Stryker involved AT ALL in the process of Wolverine’s past they’re already straying way far off base. But… It’s the movies. I don’t much mind.
Liev Schreiber IS a scrawny guy, which is kind of problematic. It’s also problematic that they’re showing Sabretooth ever being anything but Sabretooth. He’s a mutant. He was born all “red in tooth and claw” already. So… Again… the movie’s just going to do what they have to do.
And honestly, slavish devotion to the comics would be terrible. It works in the case of something like Sin City and (at least half of) 300 because those are contained stories. When you’re adapting ongoing superhero comics you’ve got (in Wolverine and Sabretooth’s cases) 30 years of history to cover. But guys like Spider-Man have 45 years worth, and then Superman and Batman have 70 years worth… It gets convoluted. So trimming some of the fat to tell a more succinct story is OK.
But Wraith really is black.

Thanks, Aaron. All great points. And great info about Wraith. I wasn’t aware of the old one. You’ve renewed my faith…some. But also, from what I hear, Schreiber has beefed up a lot. Also, look at Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut. He beefed up a lot, and they used CG on his arms, but it looked pretty good. Not TOO fake. So maybe they’ll follow a SIMILAR path on this one. One can hope.
